Web Accessibility

Who does it effect?

Approximately 20% of people in South Australia have a disability that can make it difficult for them to access online information and services. This figure can be expected to increase as our population ages. Thus it is imperative for government information to be made accessible to all in our community, regardless of their level of ability.

Accessible website design and content is good for all.  Some current design prevents people who use assisitve technologies or rely on the keyboard rather than the mouse to navigate a web site this is a barrier to access.

SA Government sites

The poor accessibility and useability of some SA Government web sites has been identified as an area that should be addressed as a priority, and standards covering accessibility are in place. To this end the Digital bridge Unit is working to improve awareness of accessible web design policies and practices by providing information and training opportunities for SA Government web workers.

Initiatives

  • Web Accessibility Community of Practice, which allows Government web workers and those across the community sector to network, swap ideas and learn from the experience of others, thus building their knowledge and skills.
  • The Digital Bridge Unit has coordinated Accessible Web Design Workshops run by Vision Australia.
