GreenIE
GreenIE is an initiative of the Information Economy Directorate (IE), which aims to work with the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry and research sector to improve the environmental performance of the ICT industry and explore new applications of ICT towards environmental sustainability.
What Can The ICT Industry Do?
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today. The ICT industry can help to address this issue by:
- reducing the carbon footprint of the industry, which currently contributes approximately 2% of carbon dioxide emissions, through improved product design and manufacturing processes
- responsible management of obsolete electronic equipment, otherwise known as "e-waste" and packaging
- developing solutions to natural resource management and other environmental issues.
What Is SA Doing?
Currently there are several computer recycling schemes operating in South Australia to assist with the sustainable disposal of computers and to make this technology available to new users and disadvantaged community sectors.
The South Australian Government is also committed to tackling climate change, through Objective 3 “Attaining Sustainability” of South Australia’s Strategic Plan.
